James served in the Civil War with three of his Wife's brother's; John Jackson, Thomas Giles, and Stephen Baker Letcher, they all served in the same unit, Co A, 20th Alabama Infantry Regiment, they survived the war, but with injuries.

Jim and Louvenia were members of the United Methodist Church, in Maud Bowie County Texas.
