Lost children- Can a child ever be forgotten? Certainly not when the love remains.... after many tears and prayers you are found....

Born to Brinton Wallace McNeil and Irene Florence Smith, Betty Jane, as she was called, was adopted in about 1938, when her real parents divorced.

She was never forgotten, but she was lost to her family after her name was changed. It took the last 5-years to finally find her, a task that I was beginning to think could never be completed.

Betty Jane was my mother's sister (my mother adopted too) but Betty's life-path was not known. The heartbreak over the search for Betty Jane was unfathomable. With the help of a distant McNeil family member, finally, the pieces of the puzzle fell in to place.

You now are claimed, Betty Jane, you are part of a large loving family.

Betty Jane grew up in Lane and Benton Counties, in about '38 she was adopted by The McDonald family in Elkton Oregon (Arthur Ross and Hulda McDonald.) Arthur was the Postmaster at Elkton for many years. Betty Jane (Patricia) attended Grade and High schools at Elkton.

She married Robert Stanley Slovensky who was serving on the USS Wisconsin (Korea). They were married twice and had a little girl name Shelley Marie (fate unknown).

On October 16, Patty was on her way back from Portsmouth Virginia, to Elkton, with a friend. In fog, the friend hit a gasoline tanker head-on, Patty (a passenger) was killed instantly (pinned in the wreck for 15 minutes) her friend lived but a few days, and died at the hospital.

Patty was only 22 when she died, her death left a gap in two families, the McDonald's and the McNeil's.

Her tombstone reflects she was serving as a WAC in the military.

Enlisted Women's Armed Corp (Fort Lee Virginia)
Private E-2

Honorably Discharged

Other siblings are Janet Ann and Janice Nan (McNeil) Blackman, Betty Doreen (McNeil) Oakland, Kenneth (McNeil) Jon Christian Jensen, and Brinton (Bob) Wallace McNeil, Jr. Because of the adoptions, not all children are linked to this page.

Betty Jane was raised by a loving family and when she passed she was deeply mourned. However, Betty Jane had another family too, this is her birth family, she is loved and missed by us as well. Adoptions cannot be undone, but the love can never be erased.

I vowed before I died I would find Betty Jane and her brother Kenny (Jon Christian). This is now complete, I can rest at night, a huge burden has been lifted from my heart. All the children have now passed on, all are now united!

Rest in Peace Betty Jane, you will never be lost again!

From the 1950 Elkton Yearbook:

"I bequeath my sunny disposition to Virginia Esslinger, and my forwardness to Andy Andersen." Patty McDonald"
