While stationed at Hainault Farm aerodrome near Ilford, Essex, England he was part of the Home Defence Squadron flying BE 12a machines attacking the new aerial threat, the Gotha bombers. Later he was to fly the "Big Ack", the largest machine to see service at either of the Ilford aerodromes-it was an Armstrong Whitworth FK8 two-seat observation machine with a wingspan of 43 feet 6 inches. It had a top speed of 90 mph and an operational ceiling of 13,000 feet.
