Ida was the daughter of Bernard Emil Witter of Gresham Oregon. He was born in Saxony, Germany and immigrated when he was 4 years old with his parents. He married Barbara C. Shoepfel in June of 1868 in Cincinatti, Ohio. Bernard brought his family to Gresham, Oregon, in 1887. The family settled on a 105 acre farm, one mile south of Gresham. Ida was about 13 years of age at the time. Ida had one sister, Louise Susan and two brothers; Charles George and Arthur Bernard. John's nephew, Lewis Shattuck, became Mayor of Gresham.
