Lieutenant Colonel Charles Oliver Swanston, DSO, 34th Prince Albert Victor's Own Poona Horse,was the son of Major General William Oliver Swanston (Indian Army) and Catherine Elizabeth Swanston (nee Davies). He was baptised on 9 Jul 1865 in Cuddalore, Madras (now Tamil Nadu), India. He married the late Kathleen Bruce Johnston on 18 Jan 1898 in St Paul's Cathedral, Calcutta, Bengal, India. Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned into the Royal Irish Fusiliers as a Lieutenant on 9 May 1885. Transferred into the Indian Army on 18 Sep 1887. Promoted to Captain on 9 May 1896, to Major on 9 May 1903 and to Lieutenant Colonel on 9 May 1911. He served in the Tirah Expedition as Brigade Provost Marshal and later as DAQMG 1897-98 and was mentioned in despatches (medal and 2 clasps). Was DAAG in India from 1900, was DAQMG with the Waziristan 1901-2 and was awarded the DSO. In 1902 he served in the operations against the Darwesh Khel Waziris acting as Staff Officer to the General Officer Commanding and was mentioned in despatches [London Gazette: 5 Jun 1903]. He was on the Headquarters Staff as DAQMG in the Somaliland Field Force 1903-04 (medal and 2 clasps), a Brigade Major in India from Feb 1905, passed the Indian Staff College in 1910, He was a GSO2 in India Aug 1910 to Mar 1912. He was Second in Command of the 34th Poona Horse in 1914 and took over command in Apr 1914. He deployed with his Regiment from Secunderabad, India as part of the Indian Expeditionary Force to France soon after WW1 started. Lieutenant Colonel Swanston was killed in action.
He is also commemorated on the Indian Army WW1 Memorial in the Royal Memorial Chapel, RMA Sandhurst, Camberley, Surrey Heath Borough, Surrey, England.
