U.S. Military Figure. A prominent figure in early Texas history. Tarrant was a veteran of the War of 1812 and participated in the Battle of New Orleans (1815). He was also a veteran of the 1836 Texas War for Independence, Commander of the 1837 Northwest Frontier Rangers, and General of militia at the 1841 Indian Battle of Village Creek. Tarrant County, Texas was named for him when it was created in 1849. Tarrant died at the Parker County home of William Fondren (10 miles from Weatherford, Texas) while traveling to Fort Belknap and was buried at Pioneers Rest Cemetery. A historical marker outside the gates of the cemetery provides a brief overview of General Tarrant's life.

Gravesite Details

He was temporarily buried in Parker County after his death on August 2, 1858. A year later his remains were moved for reburial near his plantation home in Ellis County. They remained until 1928 when, they were moved to Pioneer's Rest Cemetery.
