James was the son of Richard Hubble (1779-1829) and Electa Hamilton (1788-1858) Blinn from Connecticut and Massachusetts with siblings: Julius, Mary, Chester, Leonard, and Frances. He married Mary Foote on 7 January 1836 in Tontogany, Ohio, and they had eleven children: Frank, Sarah, Charlotte, Richard, Julius, Hubble, James, Frances, Augusta, Emma, and Charles. When the war started, he left his brick mason business, and with his three sons: Frank, Richard, and Julius, enlisted and served honorably in the war. When it ended, he picked up where he had left off and with the help of his youngest son, Charles, continued his business.
