Major Burroughs Maurice Hughes, 1/4th Battalion Norfolk Regiment, was killed in action on 15th September 1915. He is buried in 7th Field Ambulance Cemetery, Anzac, where he is commemorated by a special memorial.

His commanding officer wrote:

"His loss to the regiment will be a severe one and difficult to replace. He was an officer beloved by all ranks, and one who always performed his duties fearlessly and conscientiously. His name had been sent in for promotion and mention in Despatches, [1] and we all regret that he should not have been permitted to reap his reward for his excellent services." [2]

Born at Wymondham, Norfolk, on 17th December 1871, the Boer War veteran was the son of David Watkin and Frances Hughes; husband of Catherine Mary Hughes, of Wymondham.
