Colonel Arthur Richard Cole-Hamilton was the son of Captain William Claud Cole-Hamilton and Caroline Elizabeth Josephine Stuart.

He married, firstly, Jeannette Moore, daughter of Samuel Moore, on 2 January 1882.
He married, secondly, Florence Alice Hughes, daughter of James Duke Hughes, on 18 February 1884.

He died aged 56 at The Dardenelles, Turkey, killed in action.

He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the 7th Hussars.
He fought in the Egyptian Campaign in 1882.
He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Royal Scots Fusiliers.
He gained the rank of Sudan Campaign between 1885 and 1886.
