Private First Class, U.S. Army, 87th Infantry
Regiment, 10th Mountain Division

Private First-Class Lester Leon Allison, born 7 Sep 1915, was the son of William P and Corinne Lee "Cora Lee" (Knight) Allison of Madill, Marshall County, Oklahoma. Madill is 101 miles due north of Dallas, Tx.
In the 1920 census 4-year-old Lester is living with his married mother as head of household on Second Street in Madill. His father is not listed in this census. His parents must have divorced sometime after the 1920 census.
Lester's mother remarried Alvin J Armstrong sometime before the 1930 census. Alvin was an oil well driller from Fresno, California and must have been in Oklahoma drilling oil wells.
In the 1930 census 14-year-old Lester is living with his mother and stepfather in Panoche, San Benito, California. Panoche is 90 mi SE of San Jose. His stepfather is drilling oil wells.
In the 1940 census 24-year-old Lester is living with his mother and stepfather on Muckelimi Street in San Juan, San Benito, California. Lester is a truckdriver. His stepfather is still a well driller. San Juan is 53 mi SE of San Jose.
On his Oct 1940 draft registration Lester is living in Tres Pinos, San Benito County, California. Tres Pinos is 55 miles SE of San Jose. He is employed by the Paicines Company (Ranching). His next of kin is his mother, Corrine, still living in San Juan. Tres Pinos is 14 mi ESE of San Juan.
Lester enlisted 21 Oct 1941 in San Francisco. He'd had four years of high school and was single without dependents. His civil occupation was listed under semiskilled chauffeurs and drivers, bus, truck, taxi, and tractor. He was 6'1" and weighed 180 lbs. he was assigned to Company H of the 87th Infantry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division.
On 14 Apr 1945 the 10th Mountain Division was just east of Castel d'Aiano 29 miles southwest of Bologna (lower left on map below) beginning the spring push into the Po River Valley. For much of the next four days, 15-18 April, the IV Corps area was the scene of intense ground action as the 10th Mountain and 1st Armored Divisions slowly pushed northward, expelling Axis forces from Monte Pigna, Monte Mantino, Monte Mosca, Monte Pero, and the Reno River valley.
The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for California show Allison, Lester L, Pfc from San Benito County as killed in action 17 Apr 1945 so we can assume he was killed in the mountains along the west side of the Reno River Valley. Per history of the 87the IR, Lester was killed by an artillery direct hit on his foxhole.
From History of the 87th Infantry Regiment: At about 1500, the foxhole on the first knoll, used as a CP, received a direct hit. Killed was Pfc. THOMAS I. MALLOY, and fatally wounded were Second Lieutenant MELO VUKOVICH and Second Lieutenant CLARENCE K. MUSICK. Wounded were First Lieutenant HAROLD F. ROSSI, 1st Sgt. ALEX MILLER, and Pfc. MARIO S. CALCAGNO, and three men from artillery. Pfc. LESTER L. ALLISON of Company H was killed by the same hit, and a sergeant of H Company was wounded in the legs.
