The Maryland National Guard unit he was a member of was activated into full time military service on April 20, 1942 from Baltimore, Maryland. He was noted, at that time, as being employed as a Salesmen and also as Single, without dependents.

William was declared "Missing In Action" during the war and was awarded Bronze Star with one Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.
