He served as a Sergeant in the 358th Bomber Squadron, 303rd Bomber Group, Heavy, a gunner in the U. S. Army Air Forces. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Presidential Citation. He was survived by his wife, Laura (Cooper) Baker, whom he married on November 16, 1940, in Bradley County, Arkansas. He was also survived by a son, Robert Baker. His brother, Pvt. H. Lamar Baker, also fell during the war. Sgt Baker has a memorial marker (cenotaph) at Ebenezer Cemetery, just outside of his hometown, Warren, Arkansas.
