Joseph served as a Staff Sergeant and Left Waist Gunner on B-17F "Invictus" #42-3486, 812th Bomber Squadron, 482nd Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Kings County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on November 23, 1942 in New York City, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.

B-17F #42-3486 took off, with a crew of 11, from Station 102 Thurleigh, England on a bombing mission over Halberstadt, Germany. They were attacked by German fighter aircraft and shot down crashing near Lelystad Municipality, Netherlands. There were only 3 survivors.

Joseph was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
