Hugh served as a Sergeant & Ball Turret Gunner on B-17F " Idiots' Delight " #42-30301, 710th Bomber Squadron, 447th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Baltimore, Maryland prior to the war.

B-17F #42-30301 took off, with a crew of 10, from Station #126 in England on a bombing mission over Saint-Jean-d'Angély, France. They were hit by flak flying over the Pas de Calais. The pilot, 2nd Lt. Milton, was forced to ditch the plane in the English Channel where the entire crew of ten lost their lives.

Hugh was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

Hugh also has another " Cenotaph " in the Mount View Cemetery, Camden, Maine.

" Idiot's Delight " was the first B-17 of the 94th Bomber group to survive 50 missions; not once turning back due mechanical failure. The first mission was flown July 14, 1943 and the 50th was March 22, 1944.
