Joel grew up a farmer in the area and in 1838 her married Rosanna Zuck, the daughter of another farming family. They settled in the area by the intersection of RT 20 & Asbury rd and raised a large family of mainly girls, 11 girls and 2 sons. He is listed on an 1850 census as a Blacksmith in Fairview.
