He was born in Cumberland Township, Adams County, PA. As a young man he worked as a farm laborer in Morgantown, NJ. He enlisted in the U. S. Army and was sent to Fort Dix, NJ and then overseas with Regiment, 309th Medical Detachment. He was gassed on October 26, 1918. His prospects for recovery seemed good but he died of pneumonia in Hospital 65, Semur Cote d'Or. The sad story of his last days were told by his nurse in a letter to his mother.
