Luther served as a 2nd Lieutenant & Co-Pilot, on B-24 #41-29565, 715th Bomber Squadron, 448th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Illinois prior to the war.

B-24 #41-29565 took off, with a crew of 10, from Station 146 in England on a bombing mission over Watten, France. Over their target they were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire which caused a fire in the Bomb Bay area.

While trying to return to base they ended up crashing due to the battle damage into the North Sea about 10 miles off the coast of France. Nine of the crew were killed in this crash with only one survivor ~ T/Sgt. Robinson who would be lost on another mission only " 3 days later ".

Luther was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
