James served as a Technical Sergeant & Top Turret Gunner on B-17G "Fools Rush In" #42-31066, 351st Bomber Squadron, 100th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Summit County, Ohio prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on January 7, 1943 in Akron, Ohio. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the building of aircraft and also as Married.

James was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 was hit by enemy flak, spun out and hit B-17 #43-38124 which caused both B-17's to crash near Hamburg, Germany during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.
