Grady served as a Staff Sergeant & Ball Turret Gunner on B-17F #42-30608, 326th Bomber Squadron, 92nd Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Jefferson County, Alabama prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on September 17, 1942 at Fort McClellan, Alabama. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Farmer and also as Single, without dependents.

Grady was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 was hit by enemy flak and crashed into the North Sea during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
