Staff Sergeant George Walter Gaylor, Jr. was the son of George and Katherine (Elliot) Gaylor from Clearfield, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. Clearfield is 107 miles east northeast of Pittsburgh.
In the 1930 census 9 year-old George is living with his parents and younger sister at 718 W 7th Street in Clearfield. His father was a salesman at a garage.
Sgt Gaylor married Cecelia Bethyl Luzier on 10 Oct 1941 at Westside Methodist Church in Clearfield. He enlisted 2 Nov 1943 at Greensboro, NC. At the time of his entry into active duty he lived at 538 1/2 Nichols St. in Clearfield.
The 390th Bomb Group flew out of RAF Framlingham 59 miles due east of Cambridge and 91 miles northeast of London. Staff Sergeant George W Gaylor, Jr., was the ball turret gunner on B-17 43-38337 “Cloud Hopper” Piloted by 1st Lt Robert R Richter. Cloud Hopper crashed near Dreezt, Germany on a mission to bomb oil storage facilities at Derben, Germany on 14 Jan 1945. MACR 11721.
The MACR reports: “Aircraft lost during intense fighter attacks by approximately 100 FW 190s and ME 109s in the area between 5300N-1200E and 5220N-1250E at about 1240 hours. Due to the fact that the entire squadron was lost during these encounters, there are no particulars available on the attack and subsequent loss of this aircraft. Approximately 14 chutes were reported seen from the 8 aircraft lost in this squadron. Six crew members were killed, three were taken prisoner. The deceased crew members were initially buried at the community cemetery of Dreetz on the same day as the crash. On 1 July 1947, the remains were disinterred and the bodies of five members were discovered in a common grave without coffins.”
Sgt Gaylor’s was the sixth body, which was not recovered. He left a wife, Cecelia, and one child, George W Gaylor, III. A Petition and Decree for Appointment of a guardian for George W Gaylor III (minor), of Clearfield, was filed in the Pennsylvania Wills and Probate Records on 23 Feb 1951. No other information was available.
