Charles served as a Second Lieutenant & Navigator on B-17G #42-102520, 332nd Bomber Squadron, 94th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Iowa prior to the war.

Charles was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 was hit by German flak and crashed in North Sea three miles off Texel, Holland during the war. He was awarded an Air Medal and a Purple Heart.
