Arthur served as a Technical Sergeant and Radio Operator / Gunner on B-17F " The Inferno " #42-3231, 545th Bomber Squadron, 384th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Prince George's County, Maryland prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on June 23, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Architect and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17F #42-3231 took off, with a crew of 10, from Station 106, England, on a bombing mission over Gelsenkirchen, Germany. They were attacked by 6 or 7 German fighter aircraft and eventually shot down and crashed in Erfstadt, near Liblar, Germany during the war. "4" members of the crew were lost and "6" became POW's of the German Army.

Arthur was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.
