George served as a Flight Officer & Bombardier on B-24J (#42-78605), 743rd Bomber Squadron, 455th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Poweshiek County, Iowa prior to the war.

Immediately after releasing their bombs over the target at the oil refineries of Blechhammer (Nazi-occupied Kędzierzyn-Koźle, southwestern Poland) the B-24 took a direct flak hit and the aircraft broke in two. One crew member parachuted and was taken as a POW.

George was declared "Missing In Action" in the above described mission during the war and was awarded an Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
