Arthur served as a Staff Sergeant & Ball Turret Gunner on B-17F "Las Vegas Avenger" #42-30603, 423rd Bomber Squadron, 306th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on May 21, 1942 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in a Machine shop and also as Single, without dependents.

Arthur was "Killed In Action" when his B-17 was hit by German flak which knocked out two of the engines and crashed near Zonderland Farm, St Nicolaasga, Friesland, Holland during the war.

He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster", Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Purple Heart with 1Oak Leaf Cluster.
