JOHN S. BOYER, attorney-at-law, 805 Corby-Forsee Building is a native Missourian and was born in Buchanan County, December 28, 1870. His common school education was received in the community in which he was reared. Later he graduated from Christian Brothers College at St. Joseph, the Missouri University, and the law department of Washingtion University at St. Louis. He began practicing in St. Joseph in partnership with John D. McNeely. He is now referee in bankruptcy for the St. Joseph division of the United States District Court. He has served one term as city attorney, and has also held the position of assistant prosecuting attorney for one term.

Death Ends Long Legal Career of John S. Boyer

John Sidney Boyer, commissioner of the Kansas City court of appeals, died early today in a hospital in Kansas City of a heart attack. Mr. Boyer spent most of his life in St. Joseph, and Buchanan County and held a number of public offices here.
When he was appointed a commissioner of the court of appeals he moved to Kansas City. He had been ill since 1944, when he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage but he was active in his duties as commissioner up until recently. Mr. Boyer was 74 years old.
Judge Boyer for many years was identified with the Republican party in St. Joseph but was considered independent of factional differences. In his early career he was a city attorney and was also active in county affairs.
Appointed City Counselor
Mayor John Schuder appointed Mr. Boyer city counselor in April 1933. John Randolph, now a member of the state public service commission, was named first assistant, and Francis Pickle, a practicing attorney here now, was second assistant.
At the time of his appointment he was regarded as one of the best legally equipped minds for the position because of his long familiarity with public affairs. He had served with distinction as federal referee in bankruptcy under appointments by Federal Judges Arba S. VanValkenburgh and Merrill E. Otis. He resigned that position to become a commissioner of the Kansas City court of appeals, where his accomplishments brought his further credit.
After serving two years as city counselor Mr. Boyer was named to a six-year term as a member of the state Public service commission in May 1935. He was succeeded as city counselor by J. V. Gaddy, who later became circuit judge. As a member of the public service commission Mr. Boyer took up his residence in Jefferson City, though he retained his voting address in St. Joseph. Later, he was again appointed commissioner of the Kansas City court of appeals and made his home in Kansas City.
Admitted to Bar in 1897
Born in Buchanan County, Judge Boyer received his early education in local schools and attended the Christian Brothers High School here. He received his collegiate education in the University of Missouri and the law school of Washington University, St. Louis. He was admitted to the bar in St. Joseph in September 1897, and was active in the legal and allied professions more than 50 years.
His public offices included assistant prosecuting attorney of Buchanan County, city counselor, and member of the state public service commission. His first appointment to Kansas City court of appeals as commissioner was in 1929 and continued to 1933. His last term to the court was for a term ending Sept. 1 of this year.
Brought Here for Burial
Judge Boyer married Miss Ruby Hale of Kansas City. She survives. There are two sons, Ben Franklin Boyer and John Sidney Boyer Jr. Ben Franklin Boyer is dean of Temple University of Philadelphia. John Sidney Boyer is a resident of Kansas City.
The body will be brought to St. Joseph for burial, according to present plans. The service has been set tentatively for Thursday in Kansas City at the Stein and McClure funeral home.

The body will be brought to St. Joseph following the services for a graveside service at 4 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. C. M. Chilton will be the officiating minister.
The 74-year old lawyer died Tuesday at Kansas City. He had held positions here as city counselor, assistant prosecuting attorney and referee in bankruptcy for the St. Joseph division. He retired from his position on the Kansas City court of appeals Sept. 1 when he reached retirement age.

Graveside services for John S. Boyer, retired commissioner of the Kansas City court of appeals and former public official in St. Joseph and Buchanan County, will be about 4 p.m. tomorrow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
The services here will follow initial rites at the Stine-McClure mortuary, Kansas City, Mo.., at 1 p.m. Thursday, where the Rev. Herbert E. Duncan will officiate. The Rev. C. M. Chilton will officiate at services here.
The 74-year old lawyer, who held positions here as city counselor, assistant prosecuting attorney, and referee in bankruptcy for the St. Joseph division, died Tuesday morning at Kansas City following a heart attack.
Mr. Boyer was widely known here and was active in St. Joseph Masonic circles. A 32-degree Scottish Rite Mason, he was a member of Zeredatha Lodge No. 189, A.F. & A.M. Areme Chapter, No 161, O E S.; Moila Temple, and a Knight Commander Court of Honor.
He retired from his position on the Kansas City court of appeals last Sept 1 when he reached the mandatory retirement age. Additional survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Laura Hale, Dearborn, Mo., Mrs. Lucinda Talbot and Miss Mary Boyer, both of St. Joseph.
