Peter Silas Sheffield was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mixson Memorial Clinic about 9 A.M. after he ran into the side of a car on US Highway 96.

According to Highway Patrolman Bob Hutchins, Mr. Sheffield was attempting to cross the highway in front of his home to go to his mail box. He ran into a 1960 Plymouth sedan driven by Vernon Eugene Seale, 29, of Pineland who was traveling north. Mr. Seale told Hutchins when he saw the man running across the highway toward his car he swerved into the left traffic lane attempting to avoid the impact. Mr. Sheffield's wife witnessed the accident from the family home, said Hutchins. Mr. Sheffield was brought to the clinic by ambulance where Dr. John T. Moore pronounced him dead. The victim suffered head and internal injuries.

An inquest was held at the Stringer Funeral Home by Justice of the Peace, Mrs. Fay Elveston, who rendered a verdict of accidental death.

Assisting with the investigation was Highway Patrolman W. D. Carroll and Deputy Sheriff Carlton Daugherty.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 3 P.M. in the Friendship Church near Roganville with the minister to be announced. Burial will be in the adjacent cemetery.
