MRS. MATHILDA RADLOFF DIES FRIDAY MORNING

Mathilda Adeline Caroline, daughter of William Topel and his wife Augusta, nee Paeth was born January 7, 1869, in Pommern, Germany. The fact that she was presented to the Lord in Holy Baptism eight days after her birth indicates that her parents must have been God-fearing people.

While she was a small child her parents migrated to the United States of America. At first they made their home in Chicago, Illinois, then at Hustisford, Wisconsin, and finally they settled on a farm on South Ridge. There she was instructed in the chief doctrines of the Christian faith at the Ev. Lutheran St. Matthew's church. On the 18th of March, 1883, she was confirmed by the Rev. Julius Badke.

On October 11, 1885, she was united in the bonds of holy matrimony with Carl Radloff. The marriage ceremony was performed by the Rev. F. Steyer. This union was blessed with nine children; two of them died as infants. She continued to make her home on South Ridge until 1920 when she moved to Wilton.

In 1907 her faith was sorely tried when two of her sons, Herbert, 19, and Bernard, 17, died of typhoid pneumonia.

About three years ago she made her home with her oldest daughter, Mrs. Bertha Adams, at Norwalk.

Wednesday morning, June 2, 1943, she suffered a severe stroke which paralyzed her right side. During her final illness she could not speak, but one day one of her daughters understood her to whisper: "I am going home."

Last Friday morning at seven o'clock (June 18) the Lord received her soul into her eternal home.

She is survived by three daughters; Mrs Bertha Adams, Mrs. Mathilda Gerke and Mrs. Amanda Huber, all of Norwalk, and two sons, Alfred and Otto of Madison. She is also survived by one sister, Miss Bertha Topel, 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Adams home and at the Evangelical Lutheran St. Paul's Church in Wilton, Sunday, June 20. Interment was in St. Matthew's Cemetery at South Ridge. Pallbearers were Henry Popp, Henry Von Haden, Henry Hoeft, Arnold Geise, Alfred Hanson and Hugo Limp.
