Boyce Atkins died while serving as company First Sergeant for L Company, Third Battalion, 23rd Marines. He received a shell fragment wound in his abdomen during the battle of Iwo Jima on 25 February 1945, and was evacuated to the USS Pinkney for treatment. Atkins died the following day, and was buried at sea from the Pinkney on 27 February. The location was given as 18°20'N 143°24'E.
