He resided in Shelby County, Tennessee prior to the war.
B-29 #42-65270 was part of mission #187 which was a mission to attack Osaka, Japan. This mission included "458" B-29's in the attack on Osaka itself and "16" B-29's attacking other targets. B-29 #42-65270 was one of " 10 " B-29's lost on this mission.
B-29 #42-65270 took off, with a crew of 11, from West Field, Tinian Island on a bombing mission over Osaka, Japan.
As a note ..... after a B-29 takes off they go to what is known as an "Assembly Point" where they meet up with the other B-29's that are planned for their particular formation to assembly together before preceding towards their actual target.
When B-29 #42-65270 was heading to this "Assembly Point" they were involved in a collision with B-29 #42-63496.
Based on looking at both MACR's it would appear that B-29 #42-65270 was in the correct position and for an unknown reason B-29 #42-63496 was not and ran head on into B-29 #42-65270 causing both B-29's to explode, catch fire, and crash into the sea just south of Honshu Island.
Each B-29 lost their entire crew of " 11 " making a total of " 22 " airmen lost.
Carl was declared "Missing In Action" in this collision during the war.
He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal with "2" Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Purple Heart.
