FUNERAL HERE THURSDAY FOR CLARA REUSSER

Widow of Former Local Doctor Dies Monday Evening

Mrs. Clara H. Reusser, 78, widow of Dr. Amos Reusser, died at 8:50 p.m. Monday at her home on Sprunger Street after an illness of two weeks with hypostatic pneumonia. She had been in failing health several months.

The deceased was a daughter of pioneers of this community, David and Anna Luginbill Bixler and was born in French Township on March 29, 1877. She was married to Dr. Reusser on September 6, 1896 and was the first in this community to wear a white wedding dress for the ceremony. She was a member of a group of over one hundred, mostly young people, converted in a spontaneous revival in 1886 and became a member of the First Mennonite Church.

Mrs. Reusser was widely known through her interest in missions, particularly Jewish missions and was very closely associated with the Thomas M. Chalmers and other nationally known missions. She was instrumental in sparking keen interest among people of missionary work in this area. Her interest in missions and charities continued throughout the years and in 1929 was climaxed by a tour of the Holy Land.

Dr. and Mrs. Reusser celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in a formal fashion in 1946 and two years later, 1948, the couple shared plaudits where her husband won national recognition being crowned family doctor of the year. Dr. Reusser preceded in death July 9, 1952.

For more than a score of years as long as their health permitted they entertained the national known Evangelists and Bi-scholars that came to conduct their annual union meetings.

Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. C. T.(Frances) Michaud, Mrs. Harmon (Josephine) Bagley and Mrs. Sherman (Rebekka) Stucky of Berne, Mrs. H?? (Helen) Hoffmann of New ??, N.Y., and Mrs. Robert (Laura) Krick of Decatur. Fifteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren survive.

Two brothers, Dr. N. A. Bixler, Decatur, and Dr. E.D. Bixler, Berne, and four sisters, Mrs. V?? Moss of Columbus, Ga., Mrs. ?? Rinder, Hastings, Neb., and Mrs. Clayton Smith and Mrs. A?? Winteregg survive. One brother Frank, preceded.

The body, which was at the Yager Funeral Home was returned to the residence where friends have been paying their respects since Tuesday, 6 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Mennonite Church following a brief service in the home. Officiating at the final rites will be Rev. Olin A. Krehbiel, Pastor of the church, assisted by the Rev. E. F. Clauser. Burial will be in the MRE Cemetery.
