James was son of Thomas and Elizabeth Virgin Bryan. He lived in Woodruff all his life. He married Luvada Virgina Wood in December of 1917. Jim and Luvada had 6 children, Gladys Elizabeth, James Weaden, Beaulah Jean, Ralph Marcus, Virginia Lea, and Vernon Encil Bryan. He was said to have been seen at any given time, plowing his fields, singing, with his children on the horse with him.
According to live accounts from his children and his death certificate, Jim Bryan was "shot to death by Constable Hughes". Jim was shot at his home in Woodruff while his children watched. According to newspaper accounts during that time, Jim had the biggest funeral the county had ever seen with more than 1,500 people in attendance. Jim was a well loved and respected man in the community of Woodruff.
