Joseph Jasper Deaver was the son of Richard Albert Deaver and Mary Hawkins, both of whom were born in NC. Joseph (Joe) came to Texas when he was in his teens and later became a Texas Ranger from 1881-83 in Co A of the Frontier Batallion of the Texas Rangers under Col George Baylor. He was first married in 1887 to Mary Stidham, who died having their son in 1893, then to Texas Clementine Deaver (a second cousin) in 1893.
