When he was a boy, the family moved from Ohio to Indiana. There his father continued farming. At the age of 21, John moved to Michigan. He settled in Evart, Osceola County, where he farmed. In the 1870 Census, his real estate was valued at $500.
In about 1873, John returned to Indiana. He married Harriet A Barnes on April 16, 1873 in Wabash County, Indiana. The couple had eight children. Their sons were John Harvey, George Wilson, and Henry. Their daughters were Lydia, Delilah, Stella, Daisy and Sadie. All of their children, with the exception of Daisy and Sadie were born in Indiana.
In 1880, John moved his family to Hastings, Adams County, Nebraska. There Daisy and Sadie were born. John continued farming. He was a member of the Farmer's Alliance. He also won a seat on the school board three times.
John passed away in Hastings, Nebraska in about 1928.
