Possibly born in Cookstown, Ireland, John Sheils came to America somewhere in the late 1860's with his wife Margaret Gilmour and their son Robert J. Sheils. A machinist, he first lived in New York City on Delancy Street. While living there, they had a daughter, Susan Sheils Duane. In the 1880's, they moved to New Jersey where John owned the first general store in Ridgefield Park on the southeast corner of Park Street and Lincoln Avenue.
