Colden's tombstone has no dates on it. It is a simple slab which is no longer standing but lying on the ground. There are several other similar slabs for Hardin graves in a row at Bear Creek Cemetery.

The following information on Colden Harden was obtained from census and marriage records, and Ancestry.com.

Colden W. Hardin was born in Kentucky, the son of James N. Hardin who was born in about 1790 in Virginia and died in 1885; and Sarah (Williams) Hardin who was born in about 1792 in S. Carolina and died in 1860.

In the 1850 census, James and Sarah Hardin were living in Howard County, Missouri. They were ages 60 and 58 and had 4 children left at home, which would have been younger sibling of Colden Hardin:

Sarah Hardin 1829-
James Hardin 1831-
John Hardin 1833-
Amicetta Hardin 1837-

All of these children were shown as being born in Missouri. Also in the Hardin home in this 1850 census are 5 children with the last name of Williams and a presumed mother of them named Nancy Williams age 33. Since Colden's mother's maiden name was Williams, it is assumed these are her relatives.

Colden W. Hardin was married on December 25, 1835 in Randolph County, Missouri, to Margaret Howell Jones (1817-1850). In the 1840 census of Pettis Township of Macon County, Missouri, Coldman was listed as a head of household with two other persons in the home, a female over 20, presumably Margaret, and a child under 5. (This census did not list names other than the head of household.)

In the 1850 census, Colden W. Hardin was 36 and Margaret H. was 33. They were living in Adair County, Missouri, with 5 children:

Jesse St. Clair Hardin 1838-
James W. Hardin 1841-
Sarah E. Hardin 1844
John W. Hardin 1846-
Margaret A. Hardin 1850 (newborn age 3 months)

The child under 5 who was in the 1840 census was probably Jesse.

In December, 1850, wife Margaret died and was buried at Bear Creek Cemetery in Adair County, Missouri.

On April 3, 1851 in Adair County, Missouri, Colden married Juliane Alexander (born about 1831). (Note: This is the way her name was written in the marriage record. In census records, it is written as Julia Ann.)

In the 1860 census of Adair County, Missouri, Colden 45 and wife Julia Ann 29 were listed with 6 children:

Jesse Hardin 1838-
John W. Hardin 1847-
Margaret Hardin 1850-
Susan Hardin 1852-
Colden W. Hardin, Jr. 1855-
Jenama Frances Hardin 1858-

The last 3 children are the ones born to Colden and Julia Ann since they were married in 1851 and these children were born starting in 1852.

Two of the older Hardin children are missing from this census. James, born in 1841, would now be 21 and is presumably on his own. Sarah, born in 1844, was already married and listed in a census with her husband, Hugh Bond age 20, in his parents' home in Adair County, Missouri. She was age 15 at this time.

In the 1870 census of Adair County, Missouri, Julie Ann appears to have died. Colden is now 60. Three of his previous-known children were with him, Sarah 25, Margaret 20, Colden W. Jr. 15, and Jenama 12. A new child in this census is:

David E. Hardin, age 5, born in 1865

In addition, daughter Sarah 25 who was married to Hugh Bond, has returned home with her 3 children and is listed as a Hardin instead of a Bond in this census. She and her husband appear to have divorced because Hugh Bond can be found in the 1870 census with a new wife and 2-year-old son in Ralls County, Missouri.

These are the three children of Sarah and Hugh Bond who are living with their mother and grandfatherer Colden Hardin in the 1870 census:

Margaret Ellen Bond, age 9 (1861-1937)
William T. Bond, age 7 (1863- )
Daisy S. Bond, age 5 (1865- )

According to information on Ancestry.com, Colden died on August 26, 1877 in Adair County, Missouri.
