Max Joined Company "A" of the 2nd machine Gun Battalion 1st Division just after Soissons in mid-July 1918. He was in the Saizerais Sub-Sector and participated in the St. Mihiel Offensive in mid-September. On 5 October 1918, Max was, "wounded severely at the Argonne Offensive by a M.G. bullet. He died at Field Hospital #12 at 5:45 AM 8 October 1918. Gunshot wound, battle, severe, multiple of abdomen and left forearm. He is listed as Mack Ackenbach."
Max's sister, Emile M. Achenback wrote to the Graves Registration Service on 20 July, 1920, and says," they have his name as "Mack Achenbach" and asks that the name be corrected." He was buried in his final grave under his correct name on 5 January 1922.
Max's mother was invited on the 1930-33 Gold Star Mother Pilgrimages and the final note in the file in 1932 from Emile is, " Ida Achenbach/no. My mother is still incompetent and will be unable to take this trip."

"When his gun squad had received orders to withdraw to a better position because of the intense fire to which they were subjected, the retreat was delayed because the gunner had been wounded. Private Achenbach rushed to the gun and endeavored to remove it, but while thus engaged he received severe wounds in the arms, legs and stomach, which shortly after caused his death."
G.O. No. 64, W.D., 1919 Posthumously awarded Medal presented to sister, Miss Emile Achenbach.
