Marian Imogene was born February 8, 1885 in a log cabin in Franklin Township, Allamakee County to David Garvin and Hanna Lovenia (James) Powell. She was the youngest of nine children. She received her education in the Little Red Schoolhouse in Franklin township. On August 13, 1902 Marian was united in marriage to Ira Smith. They had four sons and two daughters. Ira and Marian farmed near Volney, Iowa. Marian remained on the farm until she was 88 years old. She spent many years caring for both young and old people in her home. She started a "nursing career" in her sixties. She spent many hours cooking, cleaning, and caring for others in their homes. She was a member of her childhood church, Forest Mills United Methodist Church.
Preceding Marian in death were her parents; her husband, Ira, who died December 27, 1945; 3 sons, Lee Smith, Roy Smith, and an infant son who died at birth; one daughter, Lura Smith; and her 8 brothers and sisters: Mary Rosetta Powell, Prudence Mary Cayton, Nettie Roberta Newville, Louis Charles Powell, Clarence Mosteller Powell, Samuel Preston Powell, Agnes Esther Ferguson, and Ainsworth LeRoy Powell.
She is survived by one son George Smith of Monona, Iowa; one daughter Viola Kaufman of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina; 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
