From "Mower County in the World War" published by the Austin Daily Herald, 1919 - Irwin Pettit. Born Sept. 2, 1899, Austin, Minnesota. Son of Mr. and Mrs. V. E. Pettit, Austin. Occupation, printers' trade. Residence, Austin. Entered service Sept. 5, 1917, at Austin, in the Infantry. Assigned to Co. G, 2nd M. N. G. Trained at Camp Cody. Embarked from New Jersey, June 28, 1918. Reported missing since Nov. 4, 1918. When Irwin Pettit heard that his chum Gilbert Malone had fallen in France he dropped his work in the Herald office and enlisted in Co. G. He proved as good a soldier as he was a printer. Word came in November that he was missing, but it was not until midwinter that definite word came from the war department that he had died in action November 7.
