John Blankers, 80, Pipestone, died Friday, July 30, 2010 at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 2 at Christian Reformed Church, Pipestone, with Pastor Tim Ouwinga officiating.

Honorary casket bearers were John's granddaughters, Wendy Blankespoor, Lea Berg, Emi Scherer, Kamie Feuchtenberger.
Casket bearers were his grandsons, Allen Blankers, Lowell Blankers, Nathan Blankers, Jason Steuck, Lance Steuck, Chance Blankers, Will Blankers, Ryan Feuchtenberger, Kyle Feuchtenberger, Wade Feuchtenberger.
Interment was in Woodstock Cemetery, Woodstock.

John Laurens Blankers was born to Gerrit and Nellie (Bovendam) Blankers on Feb. 11, 1930 on the farm near Sheldon, Iowa. He was raised on the family farm known in this area as Iowash Farm, and he attended Floyd Country School #8. After his graduation from Sheldon High School, he continued his education at Sheldon Junior College. During this time, he also served in the National Guard. Upon completion of his education, he taught school for one year at Hull Junior High School in Hull, Iowa.

He married Helen Maxine Van Rooyen at the Reformed Church in Matlock, Iowa on June 5, 1951. Following their marriage they farmed in O'Brien County, Iowa. In 1959, they moved to a farm in Grange Township near Holland. They later purchased a farm in Rock Township of Pipestone County and named it the silver Hills Farm which they farmed until their retirement in 1994.
Helen preceded him in death on Dec. 15, 1996. After her death, he continued to live on the farm.

He married Evelyn Den Ouden on Dec. 26, 1998 at First Christian Reformed Church in Edgerton. After their marriage they lived on the farm. In 2008 they moved into Pipestone.
On Wednesday, July 21 John was taken to the Pipestone County Medical Center where he was transferred to Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls.
John made his profession of faith in April 1948 at First Reformed Church in Sheldon. While he was living near Holland he was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Holland where he sang in the choir, served on the session and as a church trustee. He later became a member of the American Reformed Church in Woodstock and served as church council president. He was currently a member of the Pipestone Christian Reformed Church. He was named Minnesota Cattle Producer of the Year in 1973. From 1983-1984 he served as president of the American International Charolais Association. He also served o the Pipestone County Fair Board. He served as president of the Pipestone County Extension Council.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Blankers, Pipestone; five children, Jerry (Mary) Blankers, Lake Wilson; Judy (Bill) Steuck, Pipestone; Carol (Kim) Hintermeister, St. Cloud; Keith Blankers, Mequon, Ill., and Sally (Ken) Feuchtenberer, Hancock; three stepchildren, Rod (Evie) Den Ouden, Paramount, Calif.; Donna (Mike) Muilenburg, Elkhorn, Neb., and Lyn (Don) Vande Polder, Kansas City, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and two sisters, Antonette (Jake) DeRyke, Iowa City, Iowa; and Harriet (Ivan) Van Veldhuizen, Sanborn, Iowa and sister-in-law, Eleanor (Henry) Glawe, Slayton.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen; an infant son, Dennis and one brother, Paul Blankers.
