The Obituary of John A. Parker
Individual:
Thursday November 20, 1913
After a lingering illness of many months from the dreaded tuberculosis, John Allison Parker passed away at 1:20 o'clock this morning at the home of his brother, Edward Parker, Lincoln and First streets. The funeral services will take place at the South Christian Church on Friday morning at 10 o'clock and interment will be made in the Mt. Zion cemetery. Rev. Dudley will officiate at both services.
Mr. Parker had suffered for more than two years and had been in a critical condition for the past four weeks. He moved to Los Angeles, California with his family three years ago where he remained until last August. He failed to obtain the relief which he had hoped to gain by the change of climate and returned to Charleston last August. Since that time his condition had grown slowly worse until death resulted this morning.
The deceased was born on a farm one mile southwest of Charleston August 26, 1864 and had made Charleston his home all of this life with the exception of the two years which he spent in California. On September 26, 1885 he was united in marriage to Miss Deliah Cassady. To this union ten children were born, seven of whom survice with the bereved wife. They are: Mrs. Sarah Easton, San Diego, Californis, Mres Maude Rubioux, San Diego, CA, Mrs. Ethel Morris, San Ben, CA, Willis, Fern, Ruth and Andrew who with the widow reside in Los Angeles, California. When Mr. Parker returned to Charleston his family remained in California and it is impossible for them to attend the funeral services. One brother, W. L. Parker, two half brothers, Edward and Ad Parker and one cousin, Miss Mattie Parker who seemed as a sister to the deceased, as she had alwaysmade her home with him, survive to mourn the death of a life-long Christian man who was loved by all of his fellow men.
Mr. Parker had never been associated with any fraternal organization but had been a member of the South Christian Church for many years.
John and Delila left Illinois around 1910 for California because of John Parker's ill health. John had TB and the move did not help him. The family remained in CA after John's death. I have searched the cemetary for his grave and never have found it. I have to assume that his grave is unmarked.
