He graduated from the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, in 1920. He was the Head Football Coach at the Naval Academy from 1943-1944. Among his command assignments were:
Warship Command of the Destroyer USS McCall
Commanding Officer USS San Francisco 1945-1946
Following his retirement from military service, he was the Head Football Coach for the Washington Redskins in 1949, and then worked in real estate and farming.
He was predeceased by his parents, Jasper Esten Whelchel and Maria Louisa Longstreet Whelchel; and his first wife, Virginia Denmead Hoover. He was survived by his second wife, Marion Payne Kingsbury Whelchel; and three children from his first marriage, two daughters and a son.
Interment on November 9, 1973.
