The 1880 and 1900 US census records list Stephen as a merchant and landlord respectively. He was postmaster at Locust Hill in 1879. His store was at the present intersection of routes US158 and NC150. In 1902 he built "The Maples," a Queen Anne style house that still stands. [as of 1985].
