John Black was a Civil War veteran. He enrolled in Company F, Eleventh Indiana Volunteer Regiment (Wallace's Zouaves) on the 31st of August, 1861, and served nearly 4 years until discharged July 26, 1865.
John and his first wife, Salinda Harper Phares, married in Indiana. In 1878, they moved their young family of four children to Stafford County, Kansas, established a homestead, had three more children, and developed a successful farming operation.
In 1894 John married his second wife - Laura B. Gray Crandall.
