Funeral services were held for Elbert "Nick" Cahoon at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb 14, 1978, Mat Schultz's funeral Home in Monona. Rev. Raymond Pacholke was in charge of the service. Pallbearers were Melvin Beimfohr, Kenneth Cahoon, Robert Evans, Charles Frick, Kermit Klinge and Richard Neal. Interment was in the Monona City Cem., Elbert Anson Cahoon ( known to his friends as Nick) was born Oct 23, 1893, in Mononda. Margaret A. (Blackwell) Cahoon, were early settlers in the community of Buckland on the banks of Yellow River. It was in this community, later called Sixteen, that Nick spent all of his early years until he was sent to France during World War I. After returning , he married Esther M. Van Cura on Apr 14, 1920. In 1921 they moved to Esther's home farm northeast of Monona and farmed in partnership with Esther's parents and sister, Girdey. Four children came to bless this union. Nick was an active member of Clayton No. 70 Masonic Lodge in Monona for many years. On Feb 27, 1970, he became a 50-years member. He was also presented with a 50-year membership label pin from the Monona American legion Post in that same year. In the mid-1950's Nick let his two sons take over the active farm work so he could devote more time to caring for his wife who had become an invalid. Nick became ill himself in July, 1976, but remained on the farm until about two months ago when he became completely disabled. On Feb 11, 1978, Nick died of cancer at Thorton Manor in Lansing, IA. Those who are left to cherish his memory are his wife, now residing at Thorton Manor, his daughter, Mrs. Paul (Burgette) Hart of Bolder, CO; his sister, Mrs. Jake (Mary) Sherbonda and his brother, Newt both of Lewiston, MI; six grandchildren, David, Kim, Daniel Kirby, Todd and Colleen and many nieces , nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Arlene, his son, Wilbur, his sister, Mrs. Fred (Pearl) Huff, and four brothers, Ray, John, Frank and Leonard.
