Ada Mae Milstead

Ada Mae Burnet Kitchens Milstead, 98, passed away peacefully Sunday, August 1, 2010 at home. Services are Friday, August 6, 2010 at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home High Street chapel in Jackson with visitation from noon until the service at 2 PM. She will be buried at Lakewood Memorial Park on Clinton Blvd. There will be no graveside due to the excessive heat.
Ada was born on November 26, 2911 near Utica to James Rufus and Janie Sullivan Burnet. She married A.J. Kitchens and lived in the Crystal Springs area before moving to Jackson. She was hostess/manager of the coffee shop at Jitney 14 on Fortification St. where she made many lifelong friends. She was also a hostess at First Christian Church for many years, where she remained a faithful member. As long as she was able, one of her greatest joys was worshipping and serving at her church, where she was active in Sunday school, CWF and the Garnet Davis guild.
In 1954 she married Hugh B. Milstead, who was superintendent Sanitation Dept. She was a 52 year member of the Radiant Chapter of the Eastern Star, where she advanced to Worthy Matron and also served for many years as secretary. She was also a member of the Cityettes, Patrolettes, the Rebeccas, the daughters of the Nile and other civic organizations. After she retired from the church she was employed by Maurice Joseph until she retired permanently.
Ada was a loving, caring person who always put others before herself, never forgot a friend or a relative and was always pleased to help anyone she could. She was called Nana, not only by her grandchildren but also by many young friends who loved her as she loved them.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Hugh; her daughter, Betty Kitchens Sanderford of Clinton; her brother, Jerome Burnet (Jo Etta) of Dallas; and is survived by her daughter, Bobbie Kitchens Maglathlin, who cared lovingly for her and with whom she lived with for the last 13 years; her treasured grandchildren, Linda Burrell Niemi (Johnny) of Clinton, MS, and Charles "Sonny" Sanderford (Tonya) of Dallas, TX; her great grandson, Tyler Sanderford (Kelly) and her great great grandchildren, Hannah, Joshua and Caleb, who are currently serving the Lord in the Ukraine; three sisters, Maurine Bryan of Sikeston, MO, Ollie Thompson of Nashville, TN and Katherine Brennan of Southaven, MS. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also mourn her passing. She will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched. To access the guestbook, go to Clarionledger.com. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, 645 Briarwood Drive, Jackson, MS 39211.
