He was transferred to the Confederate States Steamer, Merrimac, in preparation in the Navy yard at Portsmouth, Virginia, early in 1862. Later he enlisted in 26th Regiment North Carolina Infantry Company K and was with that unit when Lee surrendered at Appomattox.
