Jeremiah, the son of Noah I.and Pamela Haywood Alrich [Parmelia Aldrich Hayward]Shumway, was born October 15, 1827 at Oxford, Worcester, Massachusetts on the old Peter Shumway farm. All of the family are descendants of Peter Shumway who came to America from France sometime between 1660 and 1675.
Jeremiah settled in Caldonia, Minnesota in 1854. He fought in the Civil War, serving with Co. A 5th MN, and in 1881 sold his farm and moved his family to Lyons. In Lyons he was engaged in the lumber, farm machinery and coal business. He and his wife, the former Mary Maria Paine, were married July 24, 1852 and were the parents of eight children.
Jeremiah was a member of the G.A.R and both he and Mary were members of the Methodist Church.
Jeremiah died on November 25, 1921 at Lyons, Nebraska
