He enlisted three times during the Civil War. The first time, he served for 6 months in Co. K, 129th Reg. OVI. The second time, he served for 100 days in Co. A, 169the Reg. ONG. And the third time, he served until the end of the war in Co. G, 25th Reg. OVI. During his last term of service, all of his bunk mates were shot but one - and that one died of disease - making James the lone survivor.
He married Martha Ellen McKinney on Nov. 22, 1866 in Hocking Co., OH. They had at least 6 children, all born in Perry Co., OH:
