The DAILY CONSTITUTION UNION, dated Thursday, 18 August 1864, p. 2, column 5, carried the following concerning the death of Benson: "Death of an Old Citizen - Mr. Benson MCKENNEY, for fifty-five years an employ in the pattern shop of the navy-yard, died Tuesday evening, about eighty years old. He was one of the members of Naval Lodge, No. 4, who will bury him with Masonic honors on Friday afternoon."

The DAILY CONSTITUTIONAL UNION, dated Saturday 20 August 1864, p. 6, column 6, carried the following concerning the funeral of Benson: "The funeral of Mr. Benson MCKENNEY - Yesterday afternoon the funeral obsequies of this old and estimable citizen took place from his late residence on the navy yard. Rev Dr. MORSELL, Rector of Christ Church, delivered a funeral discourse at the house of the family, and the funeral cortege, forming a large and interesting procession moved off to the Washington cemetery where, after the reading by Dr. Morsell, of the grand and funeral service of the Episcopal Church, the remains were committed to the earth. Mr. MCKENNEY was the oldest master-workman in the navy yard, and from his many sterling qualities of head and heart enjoyed the affection, confidence, and high respect of all with whom he came into contact."

The DAILY NATIONAL REPUBLICAN, dated 18 August 1864, p. 3, column 1, carried the following concerning the death of Benson: "Dead - An old and much esteemed citizen, Mr. Benson MCKENNEY, died at his residence on Eleventh street east on Wednesday last. Mr. MCKENNEY has been employed in the navy yard fifty-five years. His funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon, and be attended by the Naval Lodge, the Red Men, and the Beneficial Society."

The DAILEY NATIONAL REPUBLICAN dated 20 August 1864, p. 3, column 1, carried the following concerning the funeral of Benson: "Funeral of the Late Benson MCKENNEY. The funeral of the late Benson MCKENNEY, whose death we noticed in our columns yesterday, took place from his late residence yesterday afternoon. The procession was a long one, and proceeded to the Congressional Cemetery in the following order: Tuscarora Tribe Improved Order of Red Men, headed by martial music; the Navy Yard Beneficial Society; Naval Lodge No. 4, headed by the band from Lincoln Hospital. The procession having arrived at the cemetery, Rev. Dr. MORSELL read the burial service; after which, Naval Lodge drew around the grave, where the Masonic service delivered by Past Master Wm. E. HUTCINSON, in place of Mr. CLAPHAM, R. W. M., who is confined to his house by sickness."

The EVENING STAR dated Wednesday 17 August 1864 carried the following article: "DEATH OF AN OLD CITIZEN - Last evening Mr. Benson MCKENNEY, for fifty-five years an employee in the pattern shop of the Navy Yard, during a portion of the time as foreman, died last evening at his residence, on 11th street east, near the bridge, of old age, he being about eighty years old. He was one of the "Defenders" in 1814, and for a long series of years was one of the members of Naval Lodge No. 4 (Masons,) who will bury him with Masonic honors on Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Few men bore a higher character among the citizens generally than the deceased."

The EVENING STAR dated Saturday 20 August 1864 carried the following article: "FUNERAL - There was an immense attendance yesterday at the funeral of the esteemed Benson MCKENNEY, late master workman in the Navy Yard. Naval Lodge of Masons was out, with a fine band of music from Lincoln Hospital. The Tascarora Tribe of Red Men was present with martial music. The Navy Yard Beneficial Society was also present, and also delegations from every branch of the Navy Yard. The funeral services, at the house and at the cemetery, (Congressional Burying Ground,) were conducted by Rev. Dr. MORSELL, of Christ Church, Navy Yard."
