At Home of Sisters
Garfield Hiatt, 50, prominent Winchester hardware dealer, committed suicide last Wednesday morning about 10:30 o'clock, by shooting himself through the heart. He had been in ill health for some time.
Mr. Hiatt had gone to the home of his sisters, Kate and Minnie Hiatt, about one and one-half miles east of here, Wednesday morning and about 10:30 went to a nearby cornfield where the fatal shot was fired. The body was found by his sisters. Coroner O.W. Hinshaw was called and the body removed to the Clark, Maynard and Thomas Funeral Home.
Mr. Hiatt was a partner in the Hiatt and Payne Hardware Company and had been in business here for the past twenty years. He was a member of the Masonic and the Odd Fellows Lodges and a trustee of the local Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the county council but resigned a few weeks ago because of poor health.
Surviving are the widow, two sons, Max at home and Reid residing here; three sisters Kate and Minnie Hiatt of near Winchester and Mrs. Emma Kircher of Union City; and three brothers, Ralph, and Charles of Winchester and Walter of Bastrop, LA.
Funeral services were held at the home on South East Street SAturday afternoon in Charge of Rev. G.M. Payne. Burial was made in Fountain Park Cemetery.
